Biography

Past

Paul grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and was thrust into the workplace at a very young age, initially undertaking simple tasks at an office supply store. In his spare time Paul created his own humble enterprise, which involved operating a mobile disco from a van. He soon realized the need to be familiar with the technology he was working with. This lead to Paul completing a three-year electronic engineering qualification in just one year. This immediately exposed him to the electronics industry where an affinity for IT blossomed. After 10 years in the business, Paul and his family made the move to New Zealand, and initially had to start from scratch. For the last 20 years Paul has worked within several businesses in the New Zealand IT sector, ultimately working up to his current position as Managing Director and CEO of Renaissance corp. Ltd.

Present

Paul is currently the CEO and the managing director of Renaissance Cooperation Limited which is one of the leading distributors of technology throughout New Zealand. Some of the companies that Renaissance represents are Apple, Magnum Mac and Natcoll. The Company is involved in almost every aspect of the digital economy in New Zealand. Whether it is through high-value brand management and distribution, assembling PCs or running the largest specialist technology retail chain. Renaissance’s activities enhance the lives of virtually every New Zealander. Paul Johnston leads his company in a way that encourages employees to excel and make their own decisions. As the CEO, he has also made the decision to invest and expand during the current economic recession, taking into account the long-term repercussions and benefits, rather than just the short term ones.

Future

Paul insists that he is fully satisfied in his current positions at Renaissance and enjoys being on the forefront of technological innovation. He looks forward to an unpredictable and exciting future in the technology industry, pointing out that 42% of the jobs in Renaissance did not exist ten years ago. Paul looks towards the further expansion of Renaissance and revels in the new technology that is constantly being produced.

Our Thoughts

We were impressed by the positive attitude Paul holds towards those he works with and how as a leader, he strives to empower others. Paul emphasized the importance of attitude and drive within the individual and how these traits are more important than a set of skills which can be easily learnt. We were all taken aback by his down to earth nature and found him open and encouraging regarding our questions and opinions.
